FAQ

I am currently working at a summer camp where there's no Internet and am not able to blog as much. More here.

1. Where do you live?
Ontario, Canada.

2. Are you in High School, College or University?
I just graduated from University, majoring in History with a minor in English.

3. Do you have any children?
Nope.

4. Do you have a job?
Yes! I work in the kitchen at a summer camp.

5. Can I add you on goodreads?
That would be awesome! My profile is here.

6. What is goodreads?
It’s basically a social network for readers. You can keep track of what you’re reading, what you’ve read and what you want to read, you can read and write reviews, join online book clubs, vote on books lists, recommend books to friends, do trivia, and post your writing.

7. Can I follow you on twitter?
Sure! Be warned, I post a lot of pictures of my cat. My profile is here

8. What's your e-mail?
You can e-mail me at hernoseinabook@gmail.com.

9. Are you on Pottermore/What house are you in/Can I be friends with you?
I am on Pottermore and have been sorted into Ravenclaw! If anyone wants to add me, just e-mail me.

9. What’s the 50/100 Book Challenge?
Basically, you set a goal for yourself for how many books you want to read over a year. A lot of people are doing 50, but you could do 25, 75, 100, whatever works for you. A lot of people started on January 1st but you could start tomorrow if you wanted to. You can look at my 2012 challenge and my 2011 challenge.

10. I’ve seen your 100 book challenge and you have read quite a few books this year. How did you do it? Do you have a life?
During the school year I only had classes Mondays and Wednesdays and my semester was pretty light. I had a lot of time for reading. I’m a bit obsessive as well, and have trouble putting a book down. And I like to think I have a life, but I do have quite a bit of free time lately.

11. Any tips for anyone writing reviews?
My reviews need a lot of work, but I’ll try to answer this as best as I can. Practice makes perfect, so don’t be frustrated if you have difficulty with your first few reviews. I start with a synopsis in the first paragraph, then begin the second paragraph by discussing what lead me to reading the book and my first impressions of it. In the review I’ll usually discuss the writing, the characters, themes, setting, plot and the pacing. I try not to ramble on and keep things straight to the point. I write honest reviews, so that means some negative ones. I always try and be objective: if I didn’t like a book it might be because that book just isn’t for me. I try not to tear apart a book even if I didn’t like it at all. When I started, I worried that people would tear apart what I had to say, but that has yet to happen (knock on wood.) Don't worry to much about people challenging your opinions, just write what you think.

12. I heard good things about a book, but I'm not sure if I should read it. Will you review it for me?
Most likely! It might take a while for me to do it though.

13. Are you a nerdfighter?
Yes!

14. What is a nerdfighter?
Nerdfighters are fans of the vlogbrothers (Hank and John Green) on youtube. They are made of awesome, fight to decrease world suck and are proud to be nerdy and intelligent. This video explains it perfectly.

15. I know you like John Green and I want to start reading his books. Where should I start?
What a hard question! In order of publication, his books are Looking For Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, Will Grayson, Will Grayson with David Levithan and The Fault In Our Stars. Also, Let It Snow was written with Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle. In my opinion, The Fault in Our Stars is his best book. However, Looking For Alaska is a good place to start, as it’s his first novel. They’re very different books, so if you read one and don’t like it, you still might like the other.

16. E-readers or books?
I prefer books. Books are just so pretty and smell so nice. I do have have an e-reader though (the Kobo wifi). Thankfully I don't have to choose between one or the other!

17. What’s your opinion on e-readers?
I love books, but there’s nothing wrong with e-readers. I know some people don’t like them, but if they get people excited about reading, then that’s awesome. Also, they are super convenient for travelling. I read quite a bit, and it would be a lot easier to bring a kindle with me on vacation than bringing enough books for two weeks. I'll always prefer books, but sometimes I need my e-reader for convenience.

18. Who are your favourite writers?
J.K. Rowling and Jane Austen.

19. Favourite books?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pride and Prejudice, Never Let Me Go, The Catcher in the Rye, The Hunger Games, The Book Thief, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Fault In Our Stars, The Time Traveller’s Wife, The Shadow of the Wind, I Capture the Castle.

20. Favourite books as a kid?
The Gypsy Princess by Phoebe Gilman, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, The Giving Tree, The Paper Bag Princess, Hop on Pop, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, the Guests of War Trilogy, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Where the Wild Things Are

21. How are your books organized?
I have a shelf or two for non-fiction, a skinny bookshelf for children's books, alphabetically, a fat shelf for fiction books, sorted by size then alphabetically and another skinny shelf for YA, alphabetically. I have all my fiction books recorded in a spreadsheet. I got really bored one day and thought it would be a fun thing to do. It was.

22. Can I see a picture of your bookshelves?
